Injury Averted

By Sue Greenwald

In the early 2000’s, I was cutting bagels with an extremely sharp knife, a Cutco knife. The knife slipped, and sliced deeply into the end of my thumb. I felt it going into the thumb and thought “I’m going to be in trouble here”, as it was a very deep wound.

I grabbed the wound immediately and pressed it tightly together, jumping and hopping around the kitchen in pain. This was an extremely sharp knife, and had gone deeply into the middle of my thumb, not just a surface scratch.

After a while I let go of the wound, and… it was gone. There wasn’t evidence of any injury at all to my thumb, other than the redness caused by me holding it so tightly. My kids, who’d witnessed the whole event, didn’t believe that I’d cut myself. I tried to tell them that I’d felt the knife slicing into my thumb! They thought the whole thing was a joke staged just for them.

I’m very grateful that I didn’t experience a severe wound that day!
