Daddy Saved Our Lives From an Intruder
By Cheryl Davis
When I was 12 my family had returned from my band concert. My parents were downstairs in the kitchen cooking dinner. I saw a light in my parents bedroom closet and I went to their bedroom. I went to ask my dad if he liked the concert. No response. I saw the second drawer open in their dresser where my dad keeps his wallet and keys. I went back into my bedroom in a daze. I was shaken up. I knew something was wrong.
My parents announced dinner was ready and I opened my bedroom door. My sister was on the stairs and she turned to look at me as she was walking down them. She was completely white and looked very scared. She ran down the stairs after seeing me and turned the light off. It was now pitch black and I couldn’t see a thing.
Daddy was taking to me telling me “it’s ok, walk slowly. This is what you will do. At dinner keep your plate far away from the macaroni and cheese, so you will get yelled at and possibly drop some accidentally on the table. The person in the house will run out the door during the yelling”. As I was walking down the stairs, I felt a presence near the top of the stairs. Whoever was in the house was right near me now. I went downstairs, not wanting to believe what was happening. I said out loud, “Oh, Dad is down here!”. I did exactly as Daddy told me, and had my plate too far away from the macaroni, and dropped a little on the table. My mom has a very loud voice, and I did get yelled at for a couple minutes straight, or so it seemed.
After dinner, it was my turn to do the dishes, so I would be left downstairs alone. My parents always checked the doors to make sure they were locked before bed. This time, the door was unlocked. They asked all of us kids why the door was unlocked. I said it was me, and I was hanging on the door, covering for this person in case they were still in the house. My parents said that they would not have unlocked it, and they knew the door was locked when we got home. Now that it was unlocked, I knew the intruder had left. My parents blew it off and everyone went upstairs except me.
I kept calling my sister and brother to come downstairs with me and they wouldn’t. I finally went upstairs and discussed with my sister what had happened. She said she had turned white because I was extremely white and very scared. We then told my parents what had happened, and found that the intruder came through the window and had shut it when they got in. Nothing was stolen. Thank you Daddy, for saving our lives.
