Would You Do What God Asks?
Nancy Leeder
In the summer of 2001, I was in my second year of med school, with a grueling schedule on campus from Monday to Friday, and I worked two twelve-hour shifts every Friday night and Saturday night. I barely had time to sleep, getting only three or four hours a night. I began getting divine “nudges” from God to make some very odd purchases. With my limited free time, I ignored the mild nudges for a few weeks.
As time went on, I was awakened with this feeling of extreme anxiety that I had to do as God was asking me. With my tight budget, I looked for sales to purchase gauze, adhesive tape, nitrile gloves, alcohol, peroxide, disposable lab coats, Band-Aids, and antibiotic ointments. The most curious purchase was sterile sutures for stitching up open wounds.
I didn’t dare say anything to my spouse or friends because I was wondering if I was losing my mind. The nudges kept coming, and I continued to make my purchases until I had to buy a large Rubbermaid container to hold all the supplies. I was told to always have all the supplies in my car.
Early September, after class, my best friend asked if I wanted to go out to lunch with her, and she would drive. I accepted, and she opened the back of her SUV so I could put my backpack in the trunk. She laughed and said, "Don't mind the Rubbermaid container. I have been collecting bandages, sutures, alcohol, peroxide, and nitrile gloves, and I don’t know why." I laughed and asked her to walk over to my car. I raised the trunk of my car and showed her my Rubbermaid container.
My friend was shocked. We were both surprised to receive a message from God, instructing us to gather the same supplies and always keep them in our cars. We discussed our purchased supplies and wondered why we needed to take them everywhere. We both sensed that some looming danger was near.
Less than two weeks later, while we were in class, the bombing of the Twin Towers occurred. The president of the college called all students to meet in the hallway for a big announcement. When he told us about the Twin Towers disaster, my friend and I looked at each other and knew that was why
God had us gather supplies. Fortunately, we never had to use the supplies we purchased; however, there was a lot of fear that something more might be coming after 9/11.God was gathering his warriors of light and testing to see who would answer his call. I learned that God calls all his people to help those who cannot hear his call. From that experience, I will never doubt that God is protecting all of humanity by using the people who will listen to him.
A few years ago, I was nudged to buy a manual Van de Graaf generator. I still have it on a shelf; it has never been used. Someday God will let me know why I needed to purchase that generator. Only God knows why…
