Strange Party in the Woods
By Laurie Veillette
In my early teens, we had a friend in our group who I’ll refer to as SW. SW was a lead singer in a local band. My boyfriend at the time (now my husband) knew more about him than I did as the boys had hung around more often.
I spent a 'strange afternoon' with him back around the summer of 1984 in Waterbury, CT. He proceeded to open up to me about how he had dabbled with some things and knew he was going to die before he turned 16. I was somewhat concerned, intrigued and baffled by his statement and was trying to understand why he felt this way, while suggesting that he not say things like that. He shared that he couldn't really tell me too much because if he did, then I would die too. It all seemed so bizarre, but I listened to what he told me and carried on.
Maybe a year later, we were at a party in the woods where we all used to hang out. SW was with another friend that I didn't know very well. Sometime during the gathering, they both approached me, one on each side of me, as they began to sing a very familiar song 'Don't Talk to Strangers’ by Ronnie James Dio'. I loved that song, but this began to feel creepy with two guys just randomly singing this song in my ears.
I suddenly felt 'frozen in place’, even though I was aware of everything. I felt like I couldn't move or speak! It was as if people at the party couldn't see me, like I was invisible. People walked closely by me yet did not acknowledge me, as if I was invisible and they didn't see what was going on! It felt weird! It seemed that they were all moving in slow motion.
I was paralyzed for approximately 3-4 minutes, just the length of time it took them to sing the song to me, which was just about long enough for me to take it all in. Once they finished singing the song, both boys started laughing as if they knew they did some sort of spell on me. I came out of it as soon as they were done singing the song - it was as if I was set free! They both laughed out loud, either at what they had done, or how I was feeling quite anxious about the experience, or both.
When my boyfriend saw how visibly upset I was, he told me that he had witnessed SW dappling with black magic, and that he had even done spells to try to make himself disappear. I was quite frightened at the time to the point where my boyfriend and I left the party. Several people who were there claimed that some of the spells appeared to do some strange things to SW.
SW had done some strange things at other times. One time, a friend and I were hanging out and caught him spying on us in the woods. The other singer was quiet about what had happened. When I asked him about what had happened a couple of times years later and he just acted as if he didn't remember, although I felt like he did and just didn't want to talk about it.
I asked questions for many years, but most people did not want to talk about it and just looked at me like I was crazy. Interestingly enough, SW died in a car accident (everyone else in the car survived) days before his 16th birthday! I had also heard stories about him being an abused child.
I believe that he somehow temporarily brought me to another dimension.
