A Happy Coincidence
by Sue Greenwald
In the early 2000’s, I was driving to visit my parents in another state. I drove a mini van, which was quite full. As I approached the toll booths, a rock rolled down the mountain, into the road, and hit my tire hard. It happened fast, and I couldn’t swerve to avoid it. The tire was punctured, and instantly went flat. I was forced to stop. Luckily, there was a very wide place to pull off the road. I pulled to the side of the road, and started to open up the back to get the spare tire and jack out, when another car pulled in right beside me. It was a man who said he saw the whole thing happen, and he offered to change me tire for me.
I was reluctant to have him change the tire, as I’m fairly independent. He told me that he was literally heading to the Watkins Glen raceway, where he’d be watching the races and working in a pit crew all weekend! Evidently, he likes changing tires! Once he assured me that he’d be glad to do it, I let him, as I hate doing that kind of thing. The tire was changed in record time, with ease, and I was back on my way.
What do you think the chances are of having a flat tire in front of a pit crew member?
