Angel in Disguise
by Pamela Graham
It was the Summer between 11th and 12th grade and I was waitressing at the local Golden Corral. One night late when business had been pretty slow due to storms, a man came in and sat at one of my tables. There was something about him. He had on a coat, even though it wasn’t cold, but it was raining pretty good at times.
His back looked painful and possibly deformed, and he sat in his chair a bit slumped over. He had a hat that shaded his face to the point you couldn’t even describe what he looked like. It was intriguing. He didn’t talk much at all. When he was finished and leaving he just got to the doors when a downpour started. I looked out the windows while clearing the table to be sure he made it ok to his car, but he walked up the parking lot driveway to the busy 5 lane highway.
He stepped onto the highway just as a huge Semi roared past, I screamed and dropped the plate. The few customers all turned and looked at me, then in the direction of my eyes, but the man was no where to be seen, he simply vanished, like so many Angels do when our encounter is over.
